Jesse's First Day in His Foster Home |
|
"Theres just something about that dog." Thats what a friend of GSDrescueCTX thought when she saw this hungry, injured fellow running loose behind Town Lake Animal Shelter. Attempts were made to lure him with food so he could be put directly into our rescue program, but he was too scared. Several days later, the Shelter caught him, and GSDrescueCTX immediately got involved. We found him to be very sweet with people but having no evidence of basic training. He didnt even know "sit". A closer look at his back right leg revealed a nasty cut and severe swelling. He clearly had been a stray for quite some time. Because of his injury and lack of social skills, Jesse would probably not have been eligible for Town Lake's adoption program and would have been killed. We were not going to let that happen - there was just something about him.
Jesse and Suzy Sharing a Treat Ball |
|
He stayed at the shelter just long enough to get neutered and then went home with a GSDrescueCTX volunteer for fostering. The first few days were a little rough. He had completely forgotten how to play and socialize with other dogs. Fortunately, his foster sister, Suzy, has a strong play drive and was determined to bring him around. He learned his name the first day, picked up "sit" on day two, and was getting "down" by day three. By day four, he and Suzy were best friends. Now they play chase and tug-o-war and share their bones. He sleeps on the bed, eats nutritious food, receives lots of hugs and tummy rubs, and has started basic training class. Hes been on antibiotics now for almost a month to treat the infection in his leg. He may ultimately lose that leg, but we're doing everything we can to save it. Jesse never managed to get posted as an available dog on the GSDrescueCTX site because his foster mom decided she just couldnt part with him. There's just something special about him.
Because of the group effort of several GSD volunteers, this sweet boy is alive and living a good life. Special thanks to Rae Maxwell for finding and sponsoring Jesse and for being there during his transition to a new life.
